Challenge #2: Set up a ‘news feed’ so you can follow our daily blog posts.

Now that the launch is behind us, yesterday was planning day for Jonathan and myself. We set out a schedule of tasks (the things we urge you to do), for the daily blog, and decided who we will interview on key social media topics. (Watch for Shane Gibson on using LinkedIn; Trilby Jeeves for using Twitter; Roxanne Reid for using Mobile; Gustavo Garcia for developing your social media strategy – and many more!).
Your task today is to set up an RSS feed, so that you can easily follow our daily blog posts. If you’re an old hand at RSS, you may now be excused. If RSS is news to you, then please read on.

What? News feeds – also known as RSS feeds – deliver updates to you whenever your favorite websites post something new. You can get the latest blog posts, news stories and video, all in one place, without having to go to the actual websites. (RSS stands for ‘Real Simple Syndication,’ in case you’re curious.)

Why? Without an RSS feed, you would have to go to our blog website (and every other website you want to follow) individually, each time you want to see an update. With an RSS feed all updates from all your favorite blogs and websites are delivered to one convenient location.

How?

• Go to Google Reader.
• Hit ‘Create an account,’ or log in you have a Google account.
• Now go to the Marketing Dangerously blog.
• Copy the URL: http://www.neilgodin.com/marketingdangerouslyblog/
• Go back to Google Reader.
• Hit the button that says, “Add a subscription.”
• Paste in the MD blog URL.
• Then click on “Add,” and our blog will appear.
• If you want to follow others (such as CNN etc.), simply follow the same steps.

Tipzntrix: Most web sites and blogs make it even easier and faster to subscribe to an RSS feed. Watch for an orange symbol (below). If you see one, click on it and you can subscribe instantly, without having to copy and past the URL. Also watch for horizontal bars named Google, Yahoo, etc. Some have the word ‘subscribe,’ while others (like Google, below) simply show a ‘+’ sign. They all give you an immediate way to subscribe.
