Day 4: Set up a Facebook Fan Page for your business.

Your task today is to create a Fan Page for your business on Facebook. Jonathan (who will walk you through this one), tells me that if the Facebook community were a country it would be the third largest on the planet – behind only China and India! Wow. I wonder if we can use this humungasite to build our businesses. C’mon. Let’s find out!

Now that you’ve set up a basic Facebook page, it’s time to create a fan page, so you can attract people to your business profile, and receive their endorsements. Note: In Facebook speak, to become a fan you have to “like” the page/person or product.

What? A Fan page is a sub-page of your Facebook profile that draws attention to your business or product – or book – or anything else you want to profile. Facebook recently changed a key component of this process in that although it’s still called a Fan page, you no longer become a Fan. Instead you are given the opportunity to “Like” the page. (This is a huge change that we will write more about in the days ahead).

Why? Let’s take the organization Kiva (our 2010 charity of choice) as an example. Kiva is an innovative non-profit that arranges micro loans for budding entrepreneurs in developing countries. Check them out here. Pretty impressive, huh?  Their Fan page has over 80,000 Facebook friends who “like” them. 80,000! Just imagine! And how does it work so well? Easy. When you click the “Like” icon at the top of their page, it indicates on your Facebook Profile page that you like them. Those connected to you on Facebook are also notified. Curiosity kicks in and other people join you and indicate that they “like” Kiva as well — and the whole thing (hopefully) goes viral – another wonderful Social Media term – for another day!  Here’s the link to “Like” Kiva:

How? Once you have your own page (you did that yesterday – didn’t you?) you can create a sub page that promotes your business. Here’s how. Next you need to check off that you are a local business/brand/product/organization and that you are the official representative – and, voila, your page is created. Add a picture, and a link to your website – and start writing! (Be the first to “like” your page and watch how it grows.

Tipzntrix: Once your fan page is up – tell someone. Add it to your website (Find us on Facebook). Also place a link to your fan page in your email signature file. Now you’re really getting connected – and you’ve gotta “like” that!
