Day 5: Place a link to your Facebook page in your email signature

One thing that Jonathan and I are learning is that participating in various social media sites is not enough. Making connections between sites and the rest of our online infrastructure is at least as important. Let me (the ultimate technophobe) try to explain.
Yesterday Jonathan walked us through setting up a business page on Facebook. Good. But then he called and said, “Neil, we’ve got to include a link to that page in our email signature.” Right, I responded, and then it occurred to me that we’ve also got to place a link to that page on our website. Wait. We also have to include a link in our Marketing Dangerously newsletter – and in our blog. Oh, and we also have to include that link in all the other social media sites that we participate in.
Aha. Now we get it: “Everything has to connect everything with everything else.” So if someone visits our Facebook page, they see a link to our blog. And if they come to our blog, they see a link to our Facebook business page. And so on (and so on). Got it? Okay, then today’s task is simple. We’re just going to ask you to place a link to your Facebook page, in your email signature. Here we go.

As I said, Jonathan walked us through setting up a business page on Facebook yesterday. So today, we want to start by clarifying some Facebook language. Jonathan used the term “fan page,” but that term seems to be out of use on Facebook (they still refer to “fans,” but not to Fan Pages – which they now simply call Facebook Pages). Confused? Me too. So I went here for a complete explanation and more step by step instructions. I like our term, “Business Page,” so that’s the term we’ll use from here on. (To see an example of a business page, click here to visit BMW on Facebook). Okay? So now let’s place a link to our/your Facebook business page in our/your email signature.

What? An email signature is that block of graphics and text at the bottom of your outgoing emails that names your company, tells people how to reach you – and promotes whatever you’re promoting at the moment. At Neil Godin International Inc. right now, we’re promoting our Social Media Challenge (obviously). And I have just inserted a Facebook logo below our corporate information. (If you haven’t already done so, you must create a signature for your company. If you use Outlook (as I do) simply go to Tools, then Options, then Mail Format – and then click on signatures. Need help? Click on help and search for “signature.”) Here is our NGI signature:

Why? As I said in the intro, participating in social media sites is a small part of the total program. We want people to “know” that we’re participating, and we want people to know where and how to link to us. Given that you are interacting with people who are prospective customers, the more connected you are, the more likely you are to generate leads and sales from this form of marketing.

How?
In MS Outlook, I simply opened my NGI signature file, and pasted the Facebook logo into place. (Tools > Options > Mail Format > Signatures.) Then I made the link active by using the hyperlink button (the little blue globe with a chain). If you need help with creating links please let us know.

Tipzntrix: Now that I’ve taken this first step, I’m going to feel comfortable adding links to our LinkedIn page, and to Twitter, and YouTube etc. And you?
