with Neil Godin
Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest, so we’re going to take it easy on you today. Yesterday we walked you through how to insert a link to your Facebook Business Page in your email signature. Today, we’re simply going to add other social media links. But. Before we go, I’ve got to stop and tell you that Blenz Coffee mogul, George Moen, has invited us Dangerous Marketers to his Private President’s Party, for the launch of his new line of Protein Shakes. The event will be held tomorrow (Monday) night from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Blenz flagship store at 550 Burrard Street in Vancouver. I’ll be there. See you there?

What? As we said, an email signature is the block of graphics and text at the bottom of your outgoing emails that names your company; tells people how to reach you – and promotes whatever you’re promoting at the moment. Yesterday, we added a Facebook icon to our email signature. Today, I’ve added icons for Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube as well. Here is our updated signature:

Why? The idea is to provide the people in your network – including prospective clients – with a variety of ways to interact with you. While most business people have been slow to adopt social media, we’re all used to sending email and searching with Google. Now we need to realize that YouTube is gaining on Google as the search engine of choice (it is now second only to Google). Why? Because many of us like to ‘see’ the information we’re looking for in video. Similarly, people who use social media prefer one over another (some love LinkedIn, and think Facebook is a total waste of time). So the more options we provide, the more accessible and connected we will be.
How? To obtain copies of the various social media icons, simply Google each one (search for “facebook icon,” etc.). Then copy each icon into your pictures library or other convenient location. I assembled the icons – and my email signature – in Microsoft Publisher, where I was quickly able to make all four icons the same size. Then I grouped all the elements in the signature (my logo, all the text, and the social media icons) into one graphic, ready to copy and paste into my Outlook signature file (Tools > Options > Mail format > Signatures).
Tipzntrix: Of course, these steps will be totally different if you’re using a Mac – in which case please email jonathan@neilgodin.com for tips that relate to your platform.
