Day 10: It’s time for ‘group think’ at LinkedIn

With Neil Godin

What? Yesterday, we joined LinkedIn (unless you were already linked in). Today, we engage in a good kind of ‘group think,’ LinkedIn style. We didn’t know that LI offered all these business development options (in a few days I will walk us through building a ‘company’ page on the site – and then we’ll explore different levels of paid membership, specifically designed to drive business). Today, group, we group. So let’s go.

Why? I want to form a group specifically to promote our 90-day social media challenge. You may want to form a group that involves customers and prospective customers. For example, a couple of days ago, I talked about a company called Sign Warehouse, in Denison, Texas, describing the way they use YouTube videos to promote their company and sell their products – all through customer and prospect education. Let’s say you sell bicycles. You might want to start a group called ‘Commuter Cycling Warriors’ sharing news, events, coaching (etc), in how to win the war with the car, for people who cycle to work. Get the idea?

How? Actually pretty straightforward (although it took me about an hour, including writing brief and detailed descriptions of what the Social Media group is all about). Here are the steps:

  • Sign in to LinkedIn
  • Click on Groups
  • Click on Form Group
  • Fill in the form
  • Click on ‘Create Group’

Hmm. Not the most challenging challenge so far, is it? The real challenge will be figuring out what kind of group will best serve you and your audience. Then, of course, there will be the ultimate challenge: Actually doing it!

Tipzntrix: Unless you’re doing something secretive, be sure to click the ‘Open Access’ button, so people can join your group without going through an application process. Once your group is created you are allowed to invite up to 50 of your LinkedIn contacts. I just wrote my first message to the group, asking members to alert others in their network. We’ll share what happens.
