With Jonathan Christian
Are you all of a Twitter about which “A” list celeb is in town?! Do you really care about who is at Starbucks? Is this all that Twitter has to offer? On the contrary, my dear Watson – with 105 million members, Twitter is to many “the text message service” of the Internet. News travels faster here than in any other media service. People who want to know, know where to go, and they are all potential customers of our various businesses. Today, let’s take a closer look at Twitter.
What? Started in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone and Evan Williams, as a new way to communicate, Twitter is a social networking, micro-blogging service that enables its users to quickly send and receive messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author’s profile page and delivered to the author’s subscribers who are known as followers. (Wiki). In English – whether you use your Blackberry, iphone or laptop – this is a very effective way to communicate – and demonstrate that you are an expert in your field. It’ a perfect medium for connecting and building relationships with people we need to know.
Why? With Twitter, we are now able to provide our customers and prospects with the best, the freshest, and the most relevant information possible. Let’s drop the idea of Twitter as just a social network, and instead let’s think of it as “an information network.” It can tell our customers what they care about as it is happening around the world 24/7. In Q1 of 2010 over 4 billion tweets were posted. (Note: Although there is no paid advertising on Twitter, soon businesses will be able to purchase “promoted tweets.” Companies such as Sony, Red Bull, Best Buy and Starbucks are already in – should we be thinking about what our smaller businesses could do?)
How? Joining Twitter is as easy as this:
1. Navigate to https://twitter.com/signup
2. Enter you first and last name
3. Choose a user name that reflects your brand identity e.g. smchallenge
4. Choose a password and enter your email address
5. Agree to the user terms, type the “antispam” words
6. You’re officially a Tweet!
7. Continue on thru the profile steps
8. Make us your first follow and we’ll follow you back! http://twitter.com/smchallenge
