With Jonathan Christian
It was no easy trick to come up with the name Twitter. How did they do it? The guys in San Fran wanted to capture a feeling: the physical sensation that you’re buzzing your friends – the way many of us used to buzz each other’s pagers – and the way our cell phones buzz us when they’re set on vibrate – except with Twitter we can buzz people all over the world. First they came up with the word “Twitch,” but as a product name it didn’t bring up the right imagery. So they searched the dictionary for words around it, and finally found the word Twitter – perfect! The definition: “a short burst of inconsequential information,” and “chirps from birds.” Pretty clever huh? Today, let’s twead deeper into Twitter.

What is it for? A wonderful way of letting people in your network (“followers” in tweet talk) know “what’s happening” with your business. For example, CNN and many other media outlets now get their breaking news from “tweets” around the world – live and in real time. And so can we. We can instantly let our followers know about an upcoming product launch, for example, as Blenz Coffee magnate George Moen did last week when he launched his new line of protein shakes. Or we could start a discussion forum related to our business (for example if we were VANOC, we could ask,”Do you like the Olympics Mascots?”) Get the idea?
Why? With Twitter, we can follow and be followed. I recommend you search out key people you want to follow – for instance:
• Who is the leading expert in your Industry?
• Who writes the best business books on your favorite topics?
• Who needs to know industry news as it’s being released?
Find them and follow them – simple as that. You’ll probably find that they’ll return the favor and follow you too! I tweeted one day about how cool it was to be in the Winter Olympic City and what a great day we’d had. Guess what? Complete strangers responded by following me. Here are the how-to’s:
How? Once you have a Twitter account:
- Navigate to the search box and type in any key word you like – e.g. Marketing Dangerously – and guess what pops up?
- You can create your own key words by simply adding a #in front of the word – try #socmedchal
- You can recommend others by typing #ff and then their name @smchallenge
We’re discovering so much you can use Twitter for and I’m delighted to announce that I will be interviewing a real life Twizzard next week – Trilby Jeeves from www.buffooneryworkshops.com. Why don’t you follow her too @tjbuffoonery. We’ll also be interviewing Melissa Musika @Indivine and Roxanne Reid @Roxanne_Reid. Perhaps your business has a great story to tell. If so, let me know @jdgem
