Day 16: Are you naughty or nice?

May 26th, 2010 · We welcome your comments! [0 comments so far]

With Jonathan Christian

Someone actually told me it’s seven months till Christmas today – got me thinking – time passes way too quickly and everyday we can miss out on business opportunities by not being nice enough to others. As the old saying goes, “it’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.” When using social media, nice means being helpful, and naughty means being a bother. As we complete week two of our 90-day challenge, I’m reflecting on the importance of nurturing relationships – rather than just making announcements about the campaign. With social media, if we’re nice enough, Christmas can come along every day of the year.

What? Today I want to share a bit of my personal experience in working on our 90-day campaign. Obviously, I’m not (yet) an expert in social media. But, I have  followed all 15 steps so far – and in my sales networking, I’m already being seen as an expert – just because of my involvement. In the last week I have had three approaches from referrals (love it) asking me to consult on their social media marketing – and I’ve been asked to speak at a networking event on what we’re learning. How about you? Have you followed our daily tipzntricks? Have you signed up for our newsletter? Have you been tweeting, linking, tubing and friending? And if so, has it done anything at all for your business so far? (We’d love to hear).

Why? The business world today is changing by the minute – thanks mainly to social media and the internet in general. As the economy continues to stumble, we’ve discovered that more and more “ordinary” businesses are using the internet as a way to advertise without spending money.

How? We’ve talked about using a number of social media vehicles so far. Have you joined in? Here’s a pop quiz to measure your activity:

  • Linked in – How many people are you connected to? Has anyone recommended you?
  • Facebook – How many friends do you have who “like” your business?
  • Youtube – How many subscribers to your channel?
  • Google – How many hits have you had in the past week?
  • Twitter – How many followers do you have? How many tweets have you written? And how many have been retweeted?
  • Meetup – Have you joined a Meetup group? Have you started one?

If you’ve been slow to start remember that it’s never too late!

Tipzntrix: Today is another first (actually two firsts) for me.  I’ll be interviewing a real life Twizzard – Trilby Jeeves from www.buffooneryworkshops.com . And we’ll be using Skype to record the interview so we can use it on our websites. Did you know that you could use Skype in this way? Neither did I. Stay tuned and I’ll share the how-to’s. And finally – if you want to get on the MD “nice” list – please be sure to join us by subscribing to the MD newsletter at:
