Challenge #26: Please scroll down to the “Call to Action” for today’s task
Saturday. The Hampton Inn. Langley, BC. The occasion? The second monthly gathering of participants in our Social Media Challenge. As you probably know, Twitter Twizzard, Trilby Jeeves, was our presenter this month – and she certainly gave us food for thought. Read on.
I came away with two key ideas (and a lot of insight) that I want to share with you. Idea One: You don’t have to be J.K. Rowland to write a tweet – you twit (referring to myself of course). Idea Two: All you have to do is write something interesting about what you’re doing in your business. Why are these two ideas important? Because. After setting up my own Twitter page I honestly haven’t known what to say. Trilby gave us the example of her film director partner, Peter D. Marshall, who uses Twitter to alert his network to his own film-making activities – and to pass along links to information that he knows will be of genuine interest and/or value to them. I can do the same. I can say I’m off to Toronto to do a speaking engagement – and I’m excited about presenting on a brand new topic, to an audience I’ve never worked with before. Which subtly reminds clients, prospects, and sources of referrals (who may be planning a conference) that I’m a professional speaker. And. That I’m in the market.
>The Risk:
Or I could tweet a link to someone’s marketing blog – if I was certain that I’d be thanked for doing so. The risk (obviously) is being perceived as someone who sends out cheap messages just to keep yourself ‘out there’ in the public eye. (Ouch.) How to dodge that risk? Just say something interesting or useful.
>The Reward:
Trilby demonstrated the power of Twitter by asking two members of the audience to say something interesting about their participation in the event, which she tweeted for them on her laptop. By the end of her presentation, one volunteer had received 37 responses to their tweet, while the other had over 50. In other words, word flies like a bird on Twitter. All we have to do is craft brief messages that spark peoples’ interest (it doesn’t seem to take much) and we’re in business.
>The Call to Action:
Even if you were J.K. Rowland, your Tweets would still be limited to 140 letters maximum in length. Trilby noted that this makes it quick and easy to join in. So. Our challenge today is, well, to just go ahead and do it. I did it with a tweet that said, “Off to Pr. George to do 3 days intensive coaching in how to market & sell in a soft economy. I love this stuff.” And you?
