With Neil Godin
What? Mobile Media Maven, Roxanne Reid, walked Jonathan through Tout Suite a few weeks ago – while I looked on – not really paying attention. So, of course, I haven’t been using it – until now. Now colleague Shane Morgan has he told me that Hoot Suite has changed his life on line – at least when it comes to social media. So. With apologies to Roxanne for not paying closer attention, I decided to learn about – and write about – this unique platform.
Why? Hoot Suite allows you to write one message – and then send it out to several social media outlets at the same time. In other words, I can write a message reminding people of our next Meetup gathering on Saturday, July 3 – and – instead of having to go to Twitter, and post it there – and then having to go to LinkedIn and post it there – and then having to go to Facebook and post it there – I can simply hit a button that sends my message to all three at once. How good is that, you time-whacked dangerous marketers?
How? Here’s the drill, and I think you’ll find it really straight forward:
- Go to www.hootsuite.com
- If you use Internet Explorer 8 (as I do) and you get a message saying you need to upgrade to Explorer 8 (as I did) ignore it.
- When you log in, click on the picture of the owl at top left
- Then click on ‘Settings’ and choose ‘Social Networks’
- Then click on ‘Add social network’
- Now add each social network that you want your Hoot Suite messages to go to (I chose Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, and I suggest you do the same, at least to start)
- Do as you are asked to do by the prompts (obviously)
- Then write a simple message (of less than 140 characters, so it fits on Twitter) that you would like to send out via all three social media platforms.
- Then, hit send. That’s it, you’re done! (Now, to make sure it worked, go to each of your three social media sites to see if your message appears. I did. And it did. Amazing.)
Tipzntrix: Next Monday, stay tuned for Part Two – how to write a series of messages on Hoot Suite, and time their release via your social media outlets. This is even more amazing!
