With Jonathan Christian
On Wednesday, we took a brief look at using mobile phones for social media; today let’s discuss some of the other possibilities that are right here in the palms of our hands.
What? Cell phones are no longer a device for just taking and making calls. They can be your day-timer, your to-do list, your Rolodex, your portfolio, your gateway to the www and so much more. For many in the developing world the cell phone is their ‘only’ gateway to the outside world – because it’s their only telephone and computer. Here in the west more and more of us now use our cell phones (like the Blackberry and iPhone) to stay in touch without talking – using texting and social media. In fact recent statistics show that social media usage via cell phone is rapidly outpacing desktop usage.
Why? If you’re like most business people, your cell phone is still just a cell phone. But as you get going in using social media to build business, does it make sense to return to the office to update your Facebook status? Notifying your audience of breaking news at an all important conference you’re attending demands an instant update. And why not let people know you will be attending our next Social Media Challenge Meetup gathering (this Saturday afternoon; see details below) as a way of letting it be known that you’re keeping up with the latest developments in the business world?
How? It’s becoming easier and easier to stay in the social media loop. A quick line or two on your Facebook page, and or a comment on Twitter (for example, tweeting, “@ the #socmedchall with @neilgodin and other MD twizzards”) tells your world that you’re tuned in. Posts like this keep your profile interesting and give your circle a great snapshot of how you are spending your time – doing the right things to update your knowledge, and networking with like-minded entrepreneurs. You’ll find others asking you about the event – as you soon become the go-to source for SM information. For example, just yesterday I received an email from SM Challenge follower Vicky White asking advice on the best way to stay mobile while doing business on other continents.
Tipzntrix: Once you start – keep it up! We’re all well intentioned, but when we start something new, we tend to keep it going for a week or two and then get ‘busy’ and let it slip. Solution: Invest just ten minutes a day in social media – every day – and make an appointment with yourself (in your planner) so that you are more likely to follow through. Another tip: you don’t have to be the originator of all your messages. If you read something of interest and value to your audience, Retweet it on Twitter or share it on Facebook or Linked in. Take it from me – and I’m a very busy guy – there are always opportunities to keep up with your social media.
Ps – Want to learn more? Join us tomorrow at our next Meetup and hear Internet Marketing Guru David Neale share how he keeps his clients front and center on the web at all times! For those of our readers outside of the Metro Vancouver area we’ll post a review right after the event. (Details below).
