Day 50: How to locate Mr. or Ms. Right? Part 2

With Jonathan Christian (@jdgem)

As you may have read Wednesday, we’ve embarked on a new project in our mandate to see if social media can indeed work for business. We set out to help a loyal MD follower (and new client of mine) connect with Mr. and/or Ms. Right to join his unique sales team.

What? We’re talking about using social media to find employees. In this case by helping Peter Janzen (http://ca.linkedin.com/pub/peter-janzen/1/256/117), president and owner of Specialty Bulb Products Inc. Peter is an amazing guy whose deep industry knowledge makes him a true guru. Peter has a passion for finding unique solutions for clients who need to source lights bulbs – for all kinds of industrial applications – from Airport runways to tiny LED bulbs for scientific microscopes. A fascinating business – that now needs at least one new person to join their technical sales team (thanks to a retirement). And, as I said in my last article, we’re flexing our social media muscle to try to help.

Why? While traditional ways of scouting for people are still viable – running ads, collecting resumes, etc. – every recruiter, HR person and business owner knows that the very best candidates are ‘always’ found by networking (this is proven historically by the fact that over 80% of all jobs are never even advertised, but instead are filled by people that the employer already knows). So. Why not use the greatest networking tool in the history of business – social media networking?

How? On Wednesday we sent out a call for help in Peter’s search for new addition(s) to his technical sales team. Within a day we had two very good connections – made via email from two of our fabulous MD followers! Fantastic – two qualified leads from Industry professionals who are members of our immediate MD network. Now we’re asking for your help. If you know of someone in your social media network who is looking for a new opportunity – and has sales experience – and is a ‘people person’ who loves helping clients solve interesting problems – will you please email me at jonathan@neilgodin.com, and share your lead? And. Will you also pass this note along to your networks – so that the net spreads even wider. Our goal: to demonstrate how this can really work – by landing Peter the ‘ideal candidate.’ (Want more information? Please email me, and visit Peter’s website at www.specialtybulb.com).

Tipzntrix – One of the two MD members who wrote us reminded us that ‘email’ is a vitally important form of social media – that can be powerfully effective in recruiting. (Thanks for the reminder!) So, please consider emailing your network as well. If you’re reading this article on our blog, simply email a link to our blog, with a brief message explaining what we’re trying to do. If you’re reading this in the newsletter why not forward the newsletter to your email list? Perhaps Peter’s search could go viral. Hmm.

See you next week.
